Wing Chun (Ving Tsun)
History
Ving Tsun was a secret society term used for communication between members. The term "Ving Tsun" means "Praising Spring," meant to signify bringing back the previous government into power and overthrow the current government. Today, the term is used as a name for the system.
Legend tells of a woman named "Yim Ving Tsun" who created the system. Some say it was a lady monk named Ng Mui. Either way, there has been no legitimate record of these claims.
Ving Tsun is Southern Shaolin Kung Fu system originally created by monks in the temple during the Qing Dynasty. Some time after its creation, the temple was destroyed. Because of this, the high level monks that were practitioners of this system went into hiding in the Red Boat Opera, as well as other locations known as "Lodges." When the government discovered the secret society members hiding in the Red Boat Opera, they destroyed the boats and went to go into hiding again. The monks continued to secretly pass down the knowledge until it was brought to the public and was eventually taught to the most well known Grand Master of this era, Yip Man.
Grand Master Yip Man had a student named Moy Yat, who also became a Grand Master and was the first Ving Tsun Sifu to start a school in New York. Grand Master Moy Yat was Sifu McKillip’s “Sigung,” a.k.a his Kung Fu grandfather (his teacher’s teacher) in the system of Ving Tsun.
Wing Chun is included in our main adult curriculum. However, we offer authentic Yip Man lineage Ving Tsun, also known as Hong Kong Wing Chun, as a separate program from for those who are interested.
